Nikola car future

Nikola is a transportation and energy company focusing on zero-emission hydrogen-electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and electric vehicle drivetrains. The company is named after Nikola Tesla. Nikola Corporation was founded in 2015 by Trevor Milton. The current CEO is Mark Russell. As of September 2020, the company has a market capitalization of $25 billion.

Nikola has partnership agreements with many companies, including General Motors, Bosch, Phillips66, American Fuel Cell, Nel ASA, and others. In 2020, the company announced plans to build a gigafactory in Arizona to produce batteries and fuel cells.

The company has three main business segments: zero-emission vehicles, energy storage, and drivetrains. The zero-emission vehicle segment includes hydrogen-electric vehicles’ design, development, production, and sale. The energy storage segment comprises the design, development, production, and sale of lithium-ion batteries and methanol fuel cells. The drivetrain segment includes the design, development, display, and sale of electric vehicle drivetrains.

In May 2020, Nikola signed a definitive purchase agreement with General Motors to supply batteries and fuel cells. In September 2020, the company announced plans to go public through a merger with VectoIQ Acquisition Corp., a publicly traded particular purpose acquisition company. After the union is complete, Nikola will be listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol NKLA.

Nikola expects to produce and deliver 300 to 500 semi-trucks to customers in 2022. In 2021, the company burned around $500 million as it built out its production facilities, and investors should expect a similar or higher burn rate in 2022. The company has yet to generate any revenue from sales of its vehicles or energy storage products. However, it has received over $6 billion in vehicle pre-orders.

It remains to be seen how big Nikola will be in five years. However, given the significant investments made by partnerships like General Motors and VectoIQ Acquisition Corp., as well as the high number of pre-orders for its vehicles despite no revenue yet being generated – it seems likely that Nikola will continue to increase in size and influence within the next five years.
